2011 Web Hosting Industry Prediction
While the US continues to return to normal economic stability, the web hosting industry has been experiencing unprecedented growth. More people are being laid off from corporate jobs, and consequently more small businesses are popping up due to unemployed professionals putting on the hat of entrepreneur. These new businesses need websites and web hosts.
2010 was a very successful year for web hosting culminating in the largest choice of hosting companies, the lowest hosting prices on record, and more ‘regular’ people buying their little space on the world wide web for their blog or personal website. But what is in store for 2011 in the hosting industry? Here is a look at a few predictions.
Growth in cloud computing
‘Cloud computing’ is the current most-used buzzword in the industry. Cloud computing is a technology that uses an efficient configuration and architecture of web servers, load balancers, routers, and switches to create a reliable and super-fast network. This technology is still developing and many smaller web hosting companies have not joined the cloud bandwagon due to the costs.
However, 2010 was a boon year for cloud hosting and 2011 looks to be a turning point for the industry. While the paradigm for web hosting has been shared servers and dedicated server hosting, more web hosting companies will offer cloud hosting plans for their clients in 2011. This will present a greater choice for website owners, and allow the ‘little guy’ to enjoy the benefits of cloud computing.
Capital growth
With an unstable economy many web hosts have put off investing their profits in new technology the last few years. But the trend for 2011 for many industries, including the web hosting industry, is more capital expansion. Look for web hosting companies to upgrade their technology, invest in newer technology, and grow their businesses by offering new services.
Software as a Service (SaaS)
SaaS is not a new brand of software delivery. It has been used for industry for years. However, it has not been completely utilized for the web industry. With more and more companies offering SaaS via web connection, it is likely that web hosts will also begin offering third party SaaS to their customers. What that means is that website owners will have more choices when it comes to third-party plugins and apps they can use for their own websites.
Smart phone control panel
You can control almost anything through your iPhone – your car, your home security, your airline boarding pass, etc. However, web hosts still typically require their clients to log in online so they can access their web accounts and control their website. In 2011 look for apps you can download that allow you to access your website accounts to add or change email addresses, install plugins, change security, view stats, or any other web account control.
