iPage VS 1&1

iPage VS 1&1

When it comes to two powerful web hosting companies, both iPage and 1&1 have a solid placement. IPage has served the web hosting industry since 1998 and has grown to over 1.5 million customers and over 1 million websites. 1&1 has IT and telecommunication roots back to 1988 as a German company. Through the years 1&1 expanded its offerings and customer base, going international with web hosting service in 2000. Now 1&1 is an international powerhouse with data centers in both the US and Europe, and has a global customer base of over 9 million for all its products.

Both companies offer an excellent web hosting package. Here is a closer look:

Pricing

The iPage strategy is simple: offer a single shared hosting plan loaded with features for a cheap price, and their price of $3.50 per month for a 3-year contract ($4.50/mo for a 2 year contract) is one of the lowest prices in the industry.

1&1 offers four flexible hosting packages. The 1&1 Beginner package is $3.99/mo, a 1&1 Home package goes for $6.99/mo, the 1&1 Business plan is $9.99/mo, and the 1&1 Developer plan is $19.99/mo.

Products and Services

IPage offers more than just web hosting. They also offer a wide spectrum of services to complement their main focus. Services include website management tools, domain registration, email services, e-commerce services, account add-ons, and marketing services.

1&1 also offers domain registration as part of its main web host functions. As well, 1&1 offers Windows platform plans for those who are into Windows-based web development. And for additional fees account users can join Microsoft SharePoint which is a small business internet solution offering internet, extranet, CMS, and more online-based small business computing solutions.

Web Hosting Features

The iPage hosting plan is all-inclusive. It provides unlimited data transfer, disk space, email accounts, hosted domains, MySQL databases, and a long list of support for scripting, multi-media, photo gallery, and e-commerce shopping carts.

1&1 offers both Linux and Windows platform hosting for their plans. All plans are limited in total disk space, domains, email accounts, and hosted domains, but limits are reasonable. Unlimited bandwidth is provided for all. 1&1 does offer a 99.9% uptime guarantee, showing their complete faith in their world-class data center.

Both companies offer a free website builder as well as marketing credits toward Google and Yahoo!.

Customer Service

For a web host to become and sustain top billing in the industry they must offer exceptional and superior customer support. Both iPage and 1&1 offer 24 hour customer support via telephone and email. IPage also offers 24 hour chat support as well.

IPage pulls ahead with their online help center consisting of a wide array of articles and tutorials. 1&1 offers an online FAQ section.

Recommendations

Both companies offer great hosting plans. 1&1 claims to be the “#1″ web hosting company, but appears to be a self-proclaimed title perhaps based on their total combined customer base. However, when it comes to better price, features, and support, iPage takes the cake.
