FatCow VS Hostpapa

FatCow VS Hostpapa

Green seems to be the main scene these days. It’s nice to see that web hosting companies are doing their part to either reduce their impact on the environment or give back monetarily to help save our planet. Hostpapa and FatCow are two companies doing exactly that – placing themselves squarely in the eco-friendly group of web hosts.

Pricing

FatCow offers its web hosting services for only $66 per year ($5.50 per month $4.83 per month with this MBRW Moopon). Accounts are stocked with unlimited web space and bandwidth and include a free domain name. Normally the company charges $88 per year – with its current promotion, customers save 25%.

Running just a bit lower than FatCow, Hostpapa’s newest special offer is $4.95 per month and includes the same unlimited features such as disk space and monthly transfer. A free set up, no hidden charges and a free domain for life make this hosting account an attractive one.

Products and Services

To be able to offer customers a great low price and a lot of fantastic features, both Hostpapa and FatCow limit the products and services they offer to web hosting only. You won’t find many levels of hosting or server hosting at either company. This single-mindedness affords each company the ability to put all their efforts and time into hosting and serving their customers.

While not a product or service, giving back to the environment is one great reason to go with either hosting company. Both purchase green energy tags or certificates equivalent to what they consume in power.

Web Hosting Features

FatCow offers a plethora of site tools, marketing tools and extra features customers can easily add onto their hosting accounts. All accounts come with a website builder, analytical tools, access to FrontPage extensions and some great Google tools for managing and promoting web sites. Python and PHP are supported and MySQL databases are available in an unlimited amount. E-commerce solutions are but a click away and customers can opt to install WordPress, Joomla or even Gallery2.

Hostpapa has a great marketing set that gives its hosting customers over $140 in advertising credits. To support businesses that need quite a lot in the e-mail department, the company loads each account with unlimited e-mail accounts, unlimited e-mail forwarding accounts and equips them all with virus scanning and spam filtering. PHP 5 and Perl are supported scripting programs and customers have access to customer error pages and custom cron jobs.

Customer Service

FatCow’s help desk is the central area for customers to access a knowledge base, FAQs and tutorials. The company is well known for its “Moo Crew” – a support team dedicated to quick customer pickup, courteous manner and expedient support delivery. In addition, FatCow has a live chat button available on its web site if an existing or new customer wants some quick and handy live support.

The Hostpapa support center houses a support ticket system, a troubleshooter, an extensive knowledge base and a library of manuals and software to download. Customers can check the latest support news, search the entire support area and even click on the company’s live support button for immediate assistance.

Recommendations

Eco-friendly, full of great features and add-ons, superior support and all at a great low price. The only point that stands out between the two hosting companies is a slightly lower pricing scheme. In this case, Fatcow is the winner.
