Rackspace Cloud Review
Rackspace delivers high-quality and scalable cloud computing hosting services to meet customers’ dynamic web hosting needs. The web hosting provider offers a variety of hosting products including: on-demand computing power via Cloud Servers, robust web hosting on Cloud Sites, and unlimited online file storage with the assistance of Cloud Files.
Rackspace has over 40,000 cloud customers and still growing, from start-up endeavors to Fortune 500 companies. Although renowned for services and customer support provided, the web hosting provider is relatively expensive when compared to competitors.
Uptime and Reliability (5/5)
Rackspace’s data centers meet the required standards to support the Rackspace Network with 100% network uptime guarantees. The web hosting provider has data centers located in five cities in the U.S., two in Europe and one in Asia, designed specifically not to compromise security or redundancy.
Rackspace ensures physical security, thus each data center is equipped with a N+1 redundant HVAC system, enhanced fire suppression system, conditioned UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) and on-site diesel generators for extended power outages, and redundant enterprise-class routing equipment serves as core routing equipment. Rackspace promises customers are satisfied with uptime and reliability, vowing to honor its service legal agreement. Overall, Rackspace rates high when it comes to uptime and reliability.
Price Value (3/5)
Depending on your budget and hosting needs, Rackspace is either considered overly-priced or well-worth the cost. Pricing is somewhat difficult to calculate because cloud hosting depends on service hours used on an individual basis. Cloud hosting plans start at $10.95/ month or $0.015/hr. which includes 256MB RAM and 10GB disk space. Cloud Sites begin at $149/month. Cloud Sites includes 50GB of scalable storage space, 500GB of bandwidth, and 10,000 compute cycles per month. Add-ons such as additional disk space, bandwidth and compute cycles are available for additional fees. Cloud Servers with managed service level are also available at $0.12/hr per server, or $100/month, plus a basic $100 monthly account fee for one active Cloud Server per billing cycle.
Control Panel (3/5)
If you want to use cPanel as your client control panel option, then Rackspace is probably not for you. The control panel that Rackspace does offer to customers is one which was developed by their own team in order to take advantage of the Cloud Sites’ performance features. The specific control panel allows for enhanced flexibility when making improvements to the interface. In addition, instead of focusing on server administration, it centers on assisting with creating websites, managing databases and e-mail accounts. Customers are discouraged from switching control panel software, and not permitted to purchase and load preferred software of dedicated servers.
Customer Support (5/5)
Rackspace excels at providing quality customer service as it’s a service oriented company. The company won two 2010 National Customer Service Awards including “Front Line Customer Service Team” and “Customer Service Team of the Year”. Rackspace is renowned for its Fanatical Support services available 24/7/365 via online chat, e-mail and phone support. Certified and highly trained customer service representatives are invaluable to the company’s continued success when it comes to customer support.
Overall Value (3/5)
Although Rackspace offers a relatively affordable hosting plan, the add-ons, and hidden fees are a huge disadvantage; especially when competitors offer unlimited features. Rackspace rates mediocre when ranking overall value.
