Reseller vs. VPS Hosting

Reseller vs. VPS Hostingg

A VPS is the perfect alternative to a dedicated server. This is a tremendous benefit to a business owner that has surpassed the means of shared hosting yet does not have the resources to invest into their own server. VPS, a Virtual Private Server, describes a single server that partitions space to simulate other servers. This gives you all the resources of a stand-alone server and isolates your business in such a way that you won’t even know other users are on the same machine.

So what is the concept behind reseller hosting? It’s not all that complicated really. Most reseller accounts are hosted on shared servers, giving you the ability host multiple domains and sell server space to clients of your own. When it comes to running their business, many people are stomped with the decision of whether to go VPS or with a reseller account. As with everything, there are pros and cons to each solution. In this article we will overview both services and try to determine what works for your business.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of VPS

Despite its virtual structure, one could say the major drawback to VPS is that you are indeed sharing the server with other users. However, reliable providers typically have a maximum amount of clients on a single server, enabling all of the physical resources to be proportionally allocated among each user. And if another customer does experience a high traffic load and pushes their bandwidth limits, those actions will not impact the performance of your site.

The best thing about VPS is root access, giving you the luxury to install various types of software including operating systems, security solutions and more. The downside is that you will likely be required to perform the installations yourself. Therefore, it helps to have a little technical savvy to make sure your operation is flowing smoothly. You may have the option of receiving managed services from your provider but this generally comes at an additional fee.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Reseller Hosting

Those who desire great flexibility may not be suited for a reseller account. However, this is the perfect solution for someone trying to profit in the web hosting industry. With reseller hosting you are provided with an administrative panel such as WHM (Web Host Manager) which allows you to maintain your account. This includes all the features you are provided with as well as the disk space and bandwidth for your clients. WHM gives you the ability to provide your customers with cPanel which they use to administer their accounts. Some providers offer private label plans, meaning you can brand your company name into the business, adding more credibility in the eyes of potential clients. In many cases, a reseller account can run so efficiently that customers have no idea they are dealing with a middleman.

Conclusion

In the end, the choice between VPS and reseller hosting all boils down to what you’re looking to accomplish. Both are reliable and provide you with a number of tools to power your business. Some have said that VPS could replace reseller hosting one day, but we should probably let all the successful resellers make this judgment.

The VPS is a good friend for any reseller. I think that normal online users and small organizations can fit into the category. They do not need bulk space and special arrangement. The installation of software that we prefer is a great option. But still, larger organizations cannot gain anything from reseller concept.
